Network, network, network! and I dont mean go online to some social network either, lose the sorry attitude most people get from not working and get out and be social, I’m not saying go out and find a significant other at some bar, I’m saying get out of your shell and do something where you interact with others whom aren’t unemployed or not doing a thing. You never get anywhere hanging out at the unemployment office with a bunch of other unemployed people. Say take a class at a local school be it for an update to your skills or a general fun class to take at the junior college level. A local gym helps also to build self confidence. No matter what your looking for a job, the network you make of actual people you can speak to in person makes you more likely to find the opportunities that can help you in life, hence the old saying, ” its not what you know, its who you know”.
most of these tactics are not costly or unhealthy, so try it and maybe if all else fails you meet a great bunch of people to call friends..

if you have to try something different try a video resume with different national sites who allow these, they’re fun and you can almost dare people to view it, careerbuilder, monster and Jobclub.com seems to have it down right and if you look real hard in your own backyard many local site provide the same service, although not with national visibility.

I think that if a person is serious about getting a job, and hopefully with the company you like, you have to do your homework. That means research, the company and find out everything you can about it. When your ready for the interview, sell them on you and your skills, including peoples skills and your contributions to the company. Yes a resume is important, but in this economy your need more, much more. Think about it.

I run into my fair share of resumes and some people will send you the kitchen sink when all you need is a one pager to get in the door. Once your in the door and they want the real deal resume, provide it then. Most human resources departments only need the basic info nothing after 5 years..

I find its best to have a a standard resume for your profession and a few customized resumes for positions outside the profession, sounds awkward but when you need a job right now, you need a job right now! If you treat every company as you do the one your prospecting right now,it’ll show you as over qualified and may nix you for the position.
when you really need any job!

A job is only as hard to find as how bad you need one, I recently saw a you ng teenage boy pushing one of those ice cream carts around the neighborhood, like many a immigrant who once graced our land. He had seen how they made money and went with it. Now he has a little job to work all year long and he’s his own boss. Moral of the story we aren’t to big to learn from some of the most poorest people around us, and at his age hes off to a great start.

When looking into work opportunities don’t always count out your own resources as your best attribute, it’ll pay out in the long run and when the big paying jobs come around again, you will be ready, but not so desperate you take half the wage.
